Mantle, Maris & Me
A Boys Life As A Yankee Fanatic by Bob Berman
For North Jersey native Bobby Berman, there was no better place to grow up and no better time than during the championship run of the New York Yankees during the 1950s and 60s. A handheld transistor radio with a plug in earphone was attached to Bobby’s ear like an appendage to listen to Yankees broadcasts on WHN and later WABC from the likes of Red Barber and Phil Rizutto. Televised games on WPIX called by Barber, Mel Allen, Jerry Coleman and Joe Garagiola were must-see TV in the Berman house. And driving with dad across the George Washington Bridge to the vaunted Yankee Stadium in The Bronx was like a religious experience. Bobby Berman was a true blue Yankees fans with blue blood coursing through his veins. He lived and died with Maris and Mantle and this book recalls many memorable tales of his mania, mood swings over wins and losses, and how he’d regale his school pals with stories about Maris & Mantle coming to the Berman house for Passover (they didn’t)…being invited to speak at elementary school graduation (they weren’t)…and wild times at burger & shake joints from Teaneck to The Bronx (never happened). Bobby has an entertaining way of describing his boyhood infatuation with the field of dreams that was Yankee Stadium decades ago.
